Sue Spargo is coming to the Yukon!!!

First sorry posts have been few, man the days have been flying by, I'll catch up soon I promise.

Ok, big news... SUE SPARGO is coming to Whitehorse!!!  Happy dancin' all over the place.  I'm signed up for her 3 day workshop (you too can come!!!  just check out the Kluane Quilters Guild for more info and contact info to get signed up - there is still room).

How exciting is that!!  She'll be here March 31 through April 2nd and we'll be working on a project called Firefly.

I'm pretty much stoked.  A friend of mine (hey Lizzie in Australia!!) did one of Sue's quilts, a stunning Christmas one that you can peek at on her blog if you scroll back to the Christmas posts.  I can't wait, I've even booked the time off work!

Ok, gotta run be back soon!

I Miss Spring

I miss sunlight and warmth and the smell of dirt.

Winters in the Yukon are long and dark and I think that the past few weeks have been the hardest, I think next year I'll invest in one of those lights that produce UV rays.  Who has the energy to do anything?

So my quilting has suffered, it's been too hard to set up the machine and my cutting board, etc. in the kitchen, when I don't really want to be in the kitchen at all!  It's dark when we leave in the morning, it's dark when we come home...gosh sounds depressing doesn't it?

Well, it's not all doom and gloom, there have been some good times.  The girls and I have watched a lot of movies in my bedroom...how much fun is that?  All snuggled up, nice and cozy with a cat and my babies.  We are working our way through both Lord of the Rings and Harry Potter, we've watched nearly an entire 3 seasons of Bones...and we've been creative.  Lisa likes to colour and is perpetually covered in marker marks on her hands.  Jenny is a reader and a writer so she's not ever far from her notebooks and her pile of books.

Me?  I've been reading a ton of books. Yes, we read while watching movies...it's called multi-tasking.  LOL...although it does mean we get a lot of..."what was that"..."rewind that part"..."why didn't you tell me the good part was coming".  Yeah...good times.

I've read 3 of the latest Monica Ferris needlework mystery books.  I've read a book on Tudor England (Mary and Elizabeth and Edward oh my!).  I'm about to start a book by Diane Mott Davidson..its her latest I think called Crunch Time.  She's a caterer and solves mysteries.  Love it!

Amongst all of this I've also been cross stitching.  I find it hard to work in my stitching in the summer...it feels like a winter sport to me so this time of year is perfect to get some stitching done.

I've mentioned before that I plan on making many ornaments this year.  I've already shown my Red House in Winter (Little House Needleworks) that I finished in January.

I've also now finished Jingle Jingle by Homespun Elegance.  This was super fun to stitch up.

Oh yes, this week, I got mail!!!!  Yes, my January ornament from the Little House Needleworks 2012 ornament series arrived.    How could I not start it immediately?

Oh gosh, I just love her.

I'm going to wait until I have several stitched pieces done before I finish them into ornaments.  I think it'll be easier that way, plus it gives me time to find the perfect backing fabric.  Something in the civil war reproduction era maybe.

And that has been my week!   I do have to try and be productive though tomorrow night.  I have a Mystery Quilt meeting on Saturday and I haven't finished my homework.  I've done some but I have the last portion to piece together.  Something like 150 quarter square triangles.  Ok, maybe not 150...and I don't know if they are called quarter square triangles but they are fiddly and involve 4 triangles.  I may not be able to get them all done tomorrow night (please, please, let me get 1 or 2 done at least!).

Think good thoughts, walk in the sunshine and stay warm!

Christmas Stitching

Happy February 2nd!!!  From what I heard today, it looks like 6 more weeks of Winter.

Sounds crazy considering we got to 4 degrees Celcius here today in the Yukon.  It felt like summer considering we had two weeks of -30 (sometimes -40) C temps.  What a difference a week makes.

Nothing quilting related to discuss tonight, I've been too tired after work to do more then curl up with a good book and some hand stitching.

I have been working on my larger Christmas piece, called Christmas Visitor.

I decided to work on the brickwork portion, then move onto the window casings.  I may leave the Christmas tree to last, there are a heck of a lot of colour changes in there!!!!

So far it's been a nice easy stitch...ask me again when I get to the tree, I might be tearing my hair out!

I love Christmas ornaments.  I love vintage and sampler style ornaments.  One designer that has the look that I appreciate is Sandra at Homespun Elegance.  Her style is very elegant and timeless, not something that may fall out of style or look hokey in a few years.

I started stitching her "Jingle Jingle" pattern earlier this week, on light brown evenweave.  It looks so fresh and crisp and I think will go on my tree next Christmas quite well.  Heck, throw a red house on anything and I'm a happy girl!

Thanks for stopping by, hopefully the sun will shine and the warmer temps will give me that much needed boost to my serotonin levels so I can spend some time at my sewing machine.  The lack of sunlight (our shortened days coupled with winter's cloud cover) really do a number on my energy levels this time of year.

See you soon!
(and Merry Christmas!)
